What CrossFit gym should I go to? At first glance, the question seems pretty straightforward.
Where’s the nearest CrossFit gym to my house? Oh, it looks like there’s a few gyms nearby. Which gym has the lowest price? If these thoughts ran through your head, you’d be in the majority.
But here’s the thing. There’s probably not a decision that will impact the level of results you’ll get from CrossFit more than what gym you choose to join.
Obviously, price is a factor. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just plain silly. But if that’s the only question you ask when evaluating potential gyms to join, there’s a good chance you’ll miss out on the big-time results you could’ve gotten somewhere else that was a better fit for you.
So, what other questions should you be asking? Here are some good ones to start with.
How is the coaching?
Coaches educate, inspire, and entertain. It takes a healthy balance of all three. Being more of an entertainer than an educator can keep you from your goals while being more of an educator, but if the energy in the room isn’t there, then you will eventually lose motivation. Lastly, do they inspire you to be a better version of yourself?
Quality coaching will keep you in the game for longer if your leader has a good eye for preventing injury, keeping it fun, and continually giving you goals to shoot for throughout your development as an athlete in the CrossFit space.
Whether you’ve never touched a barbell before in your life, or a seasoned Games vet, a good coach can give you the tools you need to take your game to the next level.
At Blues City, We take ownership of our athletes. Every coach is assigned an athlete within the gym, and it is their job to make sure they are showing up consistently and making progress.

What’s the programming like?
The program is the nucleus of the gym you choose. People value a high-quality workout. People also value workouts that get them closer to their goals.
What audience are they speaking to? Is it scalable? Is there a desired stimulus or a goal for the day/week/month? All these factors are essential for getting the novice athlete and the experienced athlete in the same room together, getting the same stimulus at different levels. And lastly, it has to be both challenging and enjoyable to keep you wanting more.
At Blues City, our group program is our nucleus, and we have 4 levels of programming to speak to a broad audience of athletes… young and old — of all shapes and sizes.
How is the facility?
“How clean are your bathrooms?” This is a quote from CrossFit’s founder, Greg Glassman.
That, of course, isn’t to say training knowledge isn’t essential, but instead, that technique and coaching skills can be learned, whereas caring is more challenging to teach. The cleanliness of the bathroom and gym space is simply a symbol of how much you care and how much pride you take in your business.
At Blues City, we pride ourselves on not only the functionality of the gym but the cleanliness of the gym. Everyone picks up after themselves, the room stays clean and is one of the most aesthetically pleasing gyms in the Saint Louis area. We take pride in our work, and we take pride in our home!
How is the community?
This is also a BIG one. You need friends to hold you accountable to your goals. Athletes join a gym because of the quality of workouts and coaching, but they STAY because of the community.
Are you sure you will “fit in”? Are the members and staff welcoming of new faces in the building? ” There are good people everywhere, but you have to find the vibe that gels with you.
