We sat down with Shawn – a consistent force to our 4:15 and 5:20 p.m. classes that’s a softee for our K9 members – and asked him the pressing questions so you could get to know him a little better.

What the heck do you do outside of this place?
I work in marketing as a content strategy/search engine optimization specialist for a legal services and technology company. Outside of work, I’ve been a huge sports fan my entire life – especially when it comes to the Chiefs, Cardinals, and Mizzou. I’m an avid reader and will pick up a book about almost any topic. I also enjoy hanging at home with my dog Flip.
Fun fact about you
I graduated from Mizzou’s journalism school and used to work as a sports reporter at newspapers in Indiana and Kansas City.
What’s something not everyone knows about you?
I grew up in an extremely small town and graduated in a class of 22 people.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Gummy bears. And Sour Patch Kids. And Cheez-Its. And French fries. And pizza. And bourbon. There are several.
What’s a goal you’re working toward?
Broadly, improved strength and mobility. Specifically, a sub-50 minute Murph and 200 unbroken double-unders. Strength and especially mobility are the areas I have the most room for improvement. I look at Murph as like the ultimate CrossFit measuring stick, and then double-unders are just something I like working on.
What’s your favorite workout?
Definitely Murph. The story of the workout’s origin is really impactful, and I love the way gyms all over the country show out every Memorial Day to support each other during it. It always feels like an event.
What’s the hardest fitness-related thing that you’re always working on?
Mobility. It’s so damn tedious and boring and progress is always so incremental. But the work is worth it.
Why do you like Crossfit?
At Blues City, everyone is as passionate about CrossFit and fitness as I am but also welcoming so that regardless of your experience or fitness level you feel at home when you work out here.
What’s your favorite part about Blues City (What? We had to ask!)?
I especially appreciate the members who bring their dogs to class. Shoutout to Athena, Gussie, Pancake, Oliver, Hughie!!!
